Introduction:

Understanding the presence of essential nutrients in our food is crucial for maintaining a healthy diet. In this series of DIY activities, we will explore different tests to detect the presence of proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, and fats in various food items. These hands-on experiments will not only engage students but also deepen their understanding of the science behind nutrition.

Activity 1: Popular Food Items in India

Materials Required:

  • List of food items and respective states

  • Match the given food items to their respective states. This activity will help students
    explore the diverse culinary traditions across India while gaining knowledge about
    regional ingredients and dishes.

Activity 2: Nutrimania Game

Materials Required:

  • Nutrients printed cards
  • game rules

Procedure:
  • Play the Nutrimania game by following the rules. The game aims to educate students
    about different types of nutrients and their importance in our diet. Through interactive
    gameplay, participants will develop a better understanding of nutrition and learn how to
    make healthy food choices.

Activity 3: Setup for Nutrient Testing

Materials Required:

  • Eva foam sheets,
  • starch,
  • caustic soda
  • milk powder
  • ascorbic acid
  • iodine solution
  • CuSo4
  • test tube
  • dropper
  • plastic container
  • gloves

Procedure:

Set up the testing area on the Eva foam sheets by arranging the materials in their
designated places. This setup will serve as the foundation for conducting nutrient tests
in the following activities.

Activity 4: Carbohydrate Test

Materials Required:

  • Starch
  • water
  • iodine solution

Procedure:

  • Take a container and mix starch with water.
  • Add two drops of iodine solution to the mixture and observe any color change.
  • This test will help detect the presence of carbohydrates in the food item.

Activity 5: Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) Test

Materials Required:

  • Ascorbic acid tablet
  • water
  • blue-black starch-iodine solution (from Activity 4)

Procedure:

  • Dissolve an ascorbic acid tablet in water and pour the obtained solution into the blue-black starch-iodine solution from the previous activity.
  • Observe any changes in color, indicating the presence of vitamin C.

Activity 6: Protein Test

Materials Required:

  • Milk powder
  • water
  • CuSo4 powder
  • caustic soda

Procedure:

  • Fill a test tube with milk powder and add 15 drops of water.
  • Then, add CuSo4 powder and 10 drops of caustic soda to the mixture.
  • Mix well and observe any color change, indicating the presence of proteins.

Activity 7: Fat Test

Materials Required:

  • Butter paper
  • ground nut
  • Procedure:
  • Take two pieces of butter paper and rub the ground nut on one of them.
  • Observe any visible traces of fat left on the paper.
  • This test helps detect the presence of fats in food items.

Activity 8: Making Your Own Balanced Diet Sheet

Materials Required:

  • Pen
  • paper
  • Procedure:
  • Guide students to create their own balanced diet sheet by listing various food items from different food groups.
  • Encourage them to include a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, and fats in their diet to ensure proper nutrition
